"We miss him daily. We miss his warmth and love. We miss his laughter and always helpful ways."
My father, Charles F. Horn sailed on Great Lakes freighters for 38 years. It was a job that took him away from home and family for extended periods. It was a job he truly loved and by all accounts, was very good at. In 2010 he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer. In 2013 he lost that battle and like the job he loved so much for all those years, it took him away from us again. We miss him daily. We miss his warmth and love. We miss his laughter and always helpful ways. I said to him one time shortly before he passed away, “no matter what happens dad it’ll be OK – it’ll be like you’re on another long trip. When the boat comes in again, I’ll leave with you”. I look forward to that day when I’ll get to see him again, we’ll have a lot to catch up on and it’ll be like old times again.
